Despite being voted the country’s hardest-working nurse, Stephanie Beddis thinks her role is more a vocation than a job.
Mrs Beddis, an emergency department nurse at Hutt Hospital for more than 10 years, was nominated by her colleagues for a competition aimed to recognise the work of nurses.
The 46-year-old said she was overwhelmed at her nomination, and shocked at her win announced yesterday. “I was really sort of humbled that one of my colleagues had nominated me and recognised the work I did.
“It’s more than a job, it’s a vocation, it’s a passion of mine. I really enjoy what I do. Some days are harder than others but the team make it an easier place.”
During her time in the emergency department, Mrs Beddis has become known for her work with children.
Economist and writer Gareth Morgan, who sponsored the competition, said about 50 nurses were nominated by their patients and peers.
“We had a tremendous response from all over New Zealand.
“Stephanie made the final short list because of her dedication and passion for children’s health and wellbeing. She rallies local businesses and charities for toys and rewards for diversion therapy when children are having procedures done, and has organised a special area in the department for children to play and have entertainment.”
Mrs Beddis said long waits in the department were often distressing to children and parents. “I always make sure I include the parents, just a calming talk to everybody. It can be quite a stressful place but once you build a rapport and when they see their parents are calm, they are as well.”
Mrs Beddis won $10,000 which she donated to the Lions Club Silverstream, which has previously supported healthcare initiatives in the Hutt Valley.
Dr Morgan ran the competition in association with his recent study on the NZ health system, published as Health Cheque, co-written by Geoff Simmons.
